What Guests May Expect At A Hindu Wedding

Did you know that married women traditionally whisper well-wishes into the bride's right ear?

Attending your first Hindu wedding? Whether the wedding follows contemporary practices or closely follows traditional customs, there are certain Hindu wedding rituals you can expect.

Ganesh Puja

The wedding ceremony often starts with a prayer to Lord Ganesh who is the remover of all obstacles, askinf for his blessings for a smooth and auspicious wedding.

The groom is welcomed at the wedding venue by the bride's family. They are greeted with Aarti (lighting of lamps) and showered with flower petals as a sign of respect and acceptance.

Jai Mala

The bride and groom exchange floral garlands which symbolises their acceptance of each other as life partners.

Madhuparka Ceremony

In some traditions the bride's parents perform a ceremony where they wash the groom's feet with honey, yogurt, and ghee, and offer him milk and honey to drink.

The father of the bride performs the Kanyadaan where he gives away his daughter's hand in marriage to the groom, symbolising her transition from her father's family to her husband's family.

Hasta Milap

The joining of hands of the bride and groom signifying their union and togetherness.

Mangal Phere

The couple takes seven rounds (pheras) around the sacred fire (Agni) while reciting Vedic verses and making marital vows to each other.

During the pheras the couple takes seven steps together representing their journey through life together and the seven vows they make to each other.

Mangalsutra and Sindoor

The groom adorns the bride with a sacred necklace called the Mangalsutra which symbolises her married status. He also applies sindoor (vermilion) in the parting of her hair.

Elders and priests bless the newlywed couple for a happy and prosperous married life.

The bride bids farewell to her family and leaves her parental home to start a new life with her husband. This is often an emotional moment.
